With the recent Cliff Lee talks finally beginning to trickle down to the final lap, it seemed all but locked up that the New York Yankees would once again be adding yet another powerhouse pitcher to their already-stellar lineup. With the Yanks leaving an amazing $140+ million at the table for Lee to salivate over, it seemed like a done deal.
However, in a pretty amazing twist of events that has unfolded in the past few days, the Philadelphia Phillies hit the homestretch like a modern-day Secretariat and won a weeks-old battle for the rights to their former player – who also coincidentally led them to the 2009 World Series. In a move that certainly no one had really expected, the Yankees and Rangers were left speechless when it came to the AP’s leak of the news earlier this week.
Not only did Cliff Lee join a team that couldn’t make it out of this year’s NLCS against a young Giants squad, but he joined a team that actually offered him far less money than New York or Texas did, and even left that all-important 6th year guaranteed out of his contract.
Cliff Lee’s addition to this lineup makes up for the Phillies’ loss of Jayson Werth to the Nationals earlier this year during free agency, and certainly bolsters an already-sick staff of pitchers that include Cy Young winner Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels! The fearless foursome is already drawing comparisons to the deep, veteran staffs of the ‘66 Dodgers and the ‘89 Mets, along with the dominating Atlanta Braves’ aces of the 1990’s.
News of the acquisition has already put the Phillies in an ever bigger and better spot to not only go deep into the playoffs in 2011, but to definitely bring home yet another title to Philadelphia!
